Pests pose one of the most direct and destructive risks to museum collections, which usually contain vast amounts of organic material.
The damage caused by pests can be irreversible and is often complete.

Until recently, pest management relied heavily on the use of pesticides for the control of pests. The development of resistance to pesticides, the health risks posed by many pesticides, and an increased awareness of the fragility of our environment, has led to a more integrated approach to pest problems – Integrated Pest Management.
